I know my child has a disability, now what?!!
Over the last three decades, we have heard many specialists in the education, psychology, and medical field tell us what autism is or isn’t, what down syndrome is or isn’t, what an intellectual disorder is or is not, in fact, what a cognitive disorder is or is not.
Parents have embraced the knowledge provided by specialists and now want to step into the next phase. The ‘what’s next’ phase. We as specialists should embrace and encourage the questions that our parents are asking to help continue our research-based practices, education and guidance to families and their loved ones.
Let’s teach our families how to support, educate, shape behaviors, increase expectations and above all cherish our children, adolescents and young adults with autism, intellectual disabilities, down syndrome, and all forms of cognitive disorders.
